El Conde Street is an old street in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo. For a time it was one of the main streets of Santo Domingo. Its name is due to the Count of Peñalva. This street begins at two corners, begins at the Puerta del Conde Monument, at the intersection with Palo Hincado Street, and ends at a stone staircase that leads to Francisco Alberto Caamaño Avenue. It is currently the only pedestrian street in Santo Domingo.
This street was where the first concrete, Art Deco and elevator buildings in the Dominican Republic appeared, such as the Baquero Building built in 1927. In this street is located the first city hall of America and the first cathedral of America. Today it is a pedestrian street full of shops, small squares, hotels, restaurants and tourist sites. But there is a contrast due to the large number of abandoned buildings.
