Independence Park

Independence Park is a historic park in Santo Domingo, and it is named for being the site where the Dominican independence process took place. The park is the main platform that houses the monuments related to independence and the Dominican heroes. It was redesigned in 1912 by architect Antonin Nechodoma; at that time, there was a street separating the wall and the newly created park.

During the era of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, the Altar of the Fatherland was built, a monument that serves as the final resting place for the Founding Fathers of the Dominican Republic. On the northern corner of the park are the remains of the wall and the Fort of the Conception, which enclosed the city surrounded by walls on the west side.

It can be visited completely free of charge, both the park itself and the Altar of the Fatherland. Access is located at the Gate of the Conde, on the east side of the park, near the beginning of El Conde pedestrian street.
