Independence Park is a historical park in Santo Domingo, and owes its name to being the setting where the process of Dominican independence developed. The park is the main platform that houses the monuments related to independence and Dominican heroes. It was redesigned in 1912 by architect Antonin Nechodoma; At that time there was a separation street between the wall and the newly created park.
In the era of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, the Altar of the Homeland was built, a monument that serves as the last resting place of the Fathers of the Dominican Homeland. In the northern corner of the park the remains of the wall and the Fort of the Conception, which closed the city surrounded by walls on the west side.
You can visit completely free of charge, both the park itself and the Altar of the Fatherland. The access is located at the Puerta del Conde, east of the park, near the beginning of the pedestrian street El Conde.
