The construction of the Sagrada Familia had already begun when Gaudi took over in November 1883. Villar, the architect he succeeded, had already built a small part, including the entrance to the crypt. Villar's neo-Gothic design was rejected by Gaudi. However, he kept Gothic as a source of inspiration. He did leave out pillars and flying buttresses.
The ground plan consists of a Latin cross with a transept and no less than five naves. The scale is colossal! There is, among other things, a dome planned that is 170 meters high.
The construction of the Sagrada Familia is still very much underway. Based on a plaster model and a drawing, efforts are being made to complete the church according to Gaudi’s design. Some enthusiasts of his work would have preferred to see the construction definitively halted after his death. After all, his building plans are not detailed, and the final shape only emerged during the construction. He regularly deviated from his design.
