Os de Balaguer is a municipality located in the comarca of La Noguera. Its area is 122 km² and its population in 2009 was 985 inhabitants. In 1964 it was annexed to the now-defunct municipality of Tragó de Noguera, the nuclei of which disappeared due to the construction of the Canelles and Santa Anna reservoirs. The origin of Os de Balaguer is due to the presence of a Muslim fortification from the 9th century, conquered by Guirau Ponç II de Cabrera in 1116. The castle of Os de Balaguer stood out in the wars between the counts of Urgell and the Cabrera family. In 1415, King Fernando of Antequera granted the castle and the site of Os de Balaguer to the knight Joan Vivot. By the mid-16th century, the lords of this village were the Siscar family, a lineage that continued until the 19th century.
