While the persistent plagues which swept through this area in the mid-17th century were leading the city of Burgos to be progressively abandoned by merchants, artisans, lesser noblemen, and even noble poets, Lerma was experiencing a revival, with the wise and careful transformation of the then-unusable fortress into one of the most enviable palaces of the age.

Don Francisco Gómez de Sandoval, a man of refined taste and judgment, managed to attract the most renowned court architects to design this palace, today a Parador, as an everlasting symbol of his

dukedom. In some twenty years, the town had been transformed into an admirable and admired school of masterful building trades, with a feverish flow of money, artists, and artisans impossible to imagine at that time.
