TORRES DE QUART

The 'Torres de Cuart' form part of the Christian city walls. They were built on top of the old gate between 1441 and 1460 based on a model of the gate of Castel Nuovo in Naples, which was established by Alfonso 'El Magnanimo'. In 1623, the tower became a women's prison and between 1813 and 1932 it then served as a military prison. Previously, the tower was also called the 'Torre de la Cal' (the lime tower) because in the 18th century, lime was required to be brought into the city through this gate. The building consists of three parts: of course, the two cylindrical towers made of brick and mortar on top of an embankment-shaped base, and the central part with a rectangular layout featuring the gate under a semicircular stone arch. On the plastered façade, you can still see the impacts of the bombings of 1808 during the French siege. In some of these impacts, a few pairs of parrots now nest.
