The Plaza Mayor of Plasencia, Spain, is a porticoed square all around, located in the center of the old and historic area of the city. The most prominent building in the square is the Town Hall. On the main tower of the building is an automaton, known by all Placentinos as El abuelo Mayorga, which activates when the tower clock strikes the bell every half hour. This building dates back to the 16th century and has been restored several times over the years. It has a transitional style from Gothic to Renaissance. On one side of the Town Hall is the building of the old prison, constructed in the 17th century with a stone facade and a coat of arms of King Philip IV.
