The castle of San Esteban de Gormaz is a medieval fortress located in the Spanish town of the same name, in the province of Soria.
San Esteban de Gormaz has an important Roman past, preserves, embedded in the walls, abundant remains of Roman, funerary and religious epigraphy, and medieval vestiges of churches and fortifications. Repopulated by the Count of Castile, Gonzalo Fernández, in 912, it was one of the so-called "Gates of Castile", and during the tenth century field of numerous battles for its unique strategic importance in the defensive line of the Duero, emerging as a fortified square, with a nucleus composed of a castle located on top of a hill or hill, dominating the civilian village, which is crammed within its own fortifications. San Esteban is therefore configured as a "village" that takes a model of organic growth, adapted to the topography of the territory with main streets inside the walled enclosure, arranged longitudinally at the foot of the hill, and transversal roads with steep slope.
