Quintana Square

The Quintana Square is a symbolic square in the center of the city of Santiago de Compostela, formed by the confluence of the southern facade of Santiago Cathedral, the Casa da Parra, the San Paio de Antealtares convent, and the Casa da Conga.

It is divided by some steps, which separate the so-called Quintana de Vivos, at the upper level, from the Quintana de Mortos. It was built in the 16th century after the city council's decision to turn the medieval cemetery of Quintana de Mortos into a public square, around 1611, by master Francisco Fernández de Araújo and commissioned by the cathedral canon José Vega y Verdugo. In the same works, the eastern facade of the cathedral was enclosed with a wall, acting as a screen, which covered the apse and the apse chapels.
