No reefs are left for this beach. Once there was a brackish water lake here like in Maspalomas. An information board provides more explanation.
To the south, at the height of Punta Brava, we can find evidence of another climatic period when the sea began to reclaim the land that was lost after the last ice age (18,000 years ago). Here, a cream or pink material appears that is typical of a floodplain, with silt and clay and land snail shells. It is evidence that about 7,000 years ago, an ecosystem existed in Las Canteras that was similar to that of the Charca de Maspalomas in the south of Gran Canaria.

Because there are no reefs left, the high waves reach the beach. An ideal spot for surfers. For swimmers, a red flag is up here. Still, we see people going quite deep into the water.
