Founded as a monastery in 1504 by Isabella the Catholic, the monastery church was built between 1574 and 1592 in part of an old palace belonging to the Moorish rulers.
The church has a single nave with the main chapel. The baptismal font from an ancient Islamic well and the roof of the nave are good examples of the region's Andalusian heritage. The ceiling, with interlaced lighting, is decorated with Plateresque paintings and is one of the finest examples of Mudejar art.
The main chapel is Gothic with pyramids, moldings and shell motifs. The main altar is also Gothic and richly decorated with paintings and statues of saints. In the chapel there are works of art by artists such as Pedro de Mena or Bocanegra. Here is also the tomb of the sculptor Bernardo Francisco de Mora.
