This is one of the three ancient gates of Castell de la Vila . Its name comes from the small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Rose that was located above it.
It was originally accessible via an inclined shaft. Above the opening, widened to allow the passage of carriages, a fence defends the entrance.
In front of the arch was a small square known as Plaça de les Taules , where the gallows were placed. This square disappeared at the end of the 19th century when today's Cathedral Square was built.
Because it overlooks and leads to the suburb of the same name, it was called Puerta de Santiago (Gate of Santiago).
