The Monument to the Enganche de Jerez de la Frontera is an important sculpture in the emblematic Plaza del Mamelón , one of the most beautiful and representative open spaces in the city.
It is a large sculptural set, with two figures seated on horseback in addition to the horse-drawn carriage or horse-drawn carriage itself . It is made of bronze and weighs about six tons and is almost life-size. This work is the work of the sculptor Eduardo Soriano and represents the type of horse-drawn carriage known as the “Gran Break a la calesera”.
The Break is a handcart with four large wheels , a high drawbar and a double seat in the back; It is drawn by four or five horses, two on the helm and the others as leaders.
Traditionally, this was the most characteristic means of transport that the upper class used to go to the fair, and it was at Plaça del Mamelón that the carriages they hired to go to the fair left.
The monument thus commemorates the first years of the already famous horse fair, at the point where the horse-drawn carriages waited for their customers.
