In 1921, after the death of the 1st Marquis of Casa Domecq , the City Council of Jerez decided to name a street after him in a square linked to Albereda Cristina, where the monument to the Marquis now stands, and at the time it was commemorated as a commemorative plaque or monument.
Eventually it was decided to erect a monument to Pedro Domecq y Núñez de Villavicencio and the esteemed sculptor Lorenzo Coullaut Valera was commissioned to do the work. It was dedicated on July 21, 1923. Lorenzo Coullaut was one of the best Spanish sculptors of his time and was born on April 12, 1876 in the Sevillian town of Marchena. During his career he created important works such as the monument to Bécquer in the María Luisa Park and La Inmaculada in the famous Plaza del Triunfo in Seville. His works in Madrid were also of great artistic quality, such as the monuments to the Saineteros, Campoamor and Cervantes in the Plaza de España.
The Monument to the Marquis of Casa Domecq is a true marvel and is located in the well-known Albereda Cristina. It consists of a plinth on the top of which stands the Marquis Pedro Domecq Nuñez de Villavicencio .
He was the first Marquis of Casa Domecq, a title conferred by a papal decree of Pius X in 1906 .
On the dais, the Marquis sits in a large armchair, dressed in a terno (trousers, waistcoat and jacket). At the bottom of the base , in front of the statue of D. Pedro Domecq, we find the family coat of arms and on the back the city's dedication with the text “Jerez to his illustrious son, the Marquis of Casa Domecq”. .
The sides of the lower part of the monumental pedestal are completed with a symbol of the allegory of charity and one with the Christian doctrine. Depicted by two beautiful veiled women with rays of heavenly light shining behind.
