The General Archives of the Indies of Seville (Spain) was founded in 1785 at the request of King Charles III, with the aim of bringing into one place the documentation related to the administration of the Spanish overseas territories , which until then had been scattered in various archives to centralize.
The archive stores approximately 43,000 files, with approximately 80 million pages and 8,000 maps and drawings. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987.
Originally, this stately building was the trade fair from 1584 of the Consulate of Merchants (Consulado de Mercaderes) for the trade of gold, silver, spices and cocoa between Spain and the 'New World'. Its Renaissance-style architecture bears witness to Seville's prominent role as a trading center during Spain's Golden Age.
