The monument to John Paul II is a bronze statue on a plinth in the Plaza Virgen de los Reyes.
The monument is the city's gesture to John Paul II , who visited Seville in 1982 for the beatification of Angela of the Cross, and in 1993 when he visited Seville to conclude the XLV International Eucharistic Congress.
The monument was designed in 2006 by the association Promonumento a Juan Pablo II. It was created and exhibited at the Cajasol Center in Plaza San Francisco. Several places were considered for placement: the Plaza de la Contratación, the Puerta de Jerez and Calle Adolfo Rodríguez Jurado. Finally, it was decided to place it in the Plaza Virgen de los Reyes, near the Cathedral of Seville and in front of the Archbishop's Palace.
The statue stands on a marble base with a plaque. It was unveiled in 2012 in the presence of the mayor, Juan Ignacio Zoido, and the archbishop, Juan José Asenjo.
