Murilloeen Gardens is one of the most picturesque and historic green spaces in the city.
Officially the park is called Catalina de Ribera, but it is better known under the name of the famous painter Murillo (1617-1682). A visit to this park is definitely worthwhile and often comes in handy after visiting the Santa Cruz district. The name Jardines de Murillo was coined by Baldomero Laguillo, because the garden is located close to the birthplace of the world-famous painter.
The park runs parallel to the gardens of the Alcázar , which is not surprising, because they used to belong to the palace as 'Huerta del Retiro', or the large vegetable garden . In 1860, Queen Isabella II gave part of the palace gardens to Seville as a gift. Her grandson, King Alfonso XIII expanded the gardens to what they are today. They were designed by Juan Talavera.
Since March 12, 2002, the park has been on the list of valuable cultural objects (bienes de interés cultural). There are beautiful benches inlaid with mosaics and there is a wonderful tranquility, while you are in the center of Seville.
The garden has a great botanical diversity . You can find beautiful specimens of magnolia, ficus macrophylla, platanaceae, Italian cypress and other species.
