With its fifteenth- to eighteenth-century hôtels hanging over the water, Ornans, Gustave Courbet's hometown, is sometimes called the little Venice of Franche-Comté. The birthplace of the artistically and politically revolutionary painter is now a museum. The Courbet Museum displays some sixty canvases and drawings by the master and his pupils, as well as memorabilia and memories of himself and his friends.
