The Petit-Saint-Bernard Pass (formerly Col de Joux Pass or Col de Jupiter Pass, in Italian Colle del Piccolo San Bernardo) is an alpine pass that separates the Tarentaise (municipality of Séez, Savoie). to say the valley of Isere, Valley Aosta (valley of La Thuile). Moderately elevated compared to its Swiss counterpart (2,188 m), it is the only road crossing connecting the Savoyard and Valdostan valleys. It forms a notch between the shale points of Lancebranlette (2936 m) to the northwest and Mount Valaisan (2891 m) to the southeast.
It has been frequented since the highest antiquity, as evidenced by the many archaeological and historical remains found there. The break-through of the transalpine channels of the Mont-Blanc tunnel and the Fréjus tunnel, opened to traffic in 1965 and 1980, respectively, greatly contributed to reducing its use (133,000 vehicles in 1977.
