One of the most remarkable historical events in Vervins was the signing of the Peace of Vervins on May 2, 1598. This treaty was concluded between Henry IV of France and Philip II of Spain. It ended the wars between France and Spain and also had consequences for the Northern Netherlands, which, despite their participation in the negotiations, were not included in the treaty. The signing took place at the Château Neuf in Vervins and is internationally considered particularly honorable and important for France.
