Once served at the tables of Saint-Louis and the Pope in his palace in Avignon, the wines of Saint-Pourçain, white, rosé, and especially red, are now produced on 650 hectares classified as Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée. You then follow the cycle path to Vichy and embark on a nice rolling stretch to Marcenat. You cross the Allier River just before the village of Billy. A short detour to the 11th-century medieval fortress is a must. Be careful during the two crossings of the N209. You descend to Saint-Germain-des-Fossés, whose Romanesque Auvergne priory is a Clunisian site. From there, you enter a rather urbanized area with fairly dense traffic.
