Radinghem-en-Weppes is a municipality in the French Nord department and has a population of 1,183. The place is part of the Lille arrondissement. It still has a rural character, with agriculture, but also increasingly residential housing oriented towards Lille.
The first part, Radinghem, is a Germanic place name that is typical of the Merovingian period and is related to place names ending in -ingem and -egem in the southwestern part of the current Dutch language area. From the Merovingian period, however, nothing is known about the village from written sources. The name shows a Germanic-Dutch sound evolution and indicates an old language-mixed character of the region, which also knows many place names of Romance origin. The addition and Weppes refers to the Weppes, alongside Carembault, Ferrain, Mélantois, and Pévèle, one of the five quarters into which the Lille bailiwick was divided. The Barœul was not a quarter or region but the name of a domain.
