Ammerschwihr is a charming wine-growing town nestled in the heart of Alsace, on the famous Route des Vins d'Alsace, ideal for lovers of wine and picturesque landscapes.
The "city of three blackbirds" has a long history. It has been occupied since Roman times. Ammerschwihr is mentioned in 869 as "Amalrici Villare" or "Amalrich village". During the 20th century, 85% of Ammerschwihr was destroyed in the final battle for the reconquest of Alsace, during the harsh fighting in the Poche de Colmar in the winter of 1944-45. Like a phoenix, the village has risen from the ashes to reassert its charm and picturesque appearance.
The church, built in honor of Saint-Martin, is still standing, and its superb Rinckenbach organ has recently been restored. The village is also surrounded by ramparts, vestiges of its medieval past. Admire the Porte Haute, the Tour des Fripons (1608) and the Tour des Bourgeois (1535).
Today, this quiet, flower-filled town offers a pleasant blend of tradition and modernity.
Ammerschwihr is renowned for its fine wines, especially the Grand Cru du Kaefferkopf, and for being the commune with the largest number of winegrowers in relation to its population. Take a stroll through the old town, with its beautiful half-timbered houses and vineyard garden.
On the outskirts of the town, in a green setting, the golf course offers an exceptional setting between vineyards and forests.
For families, come and discover the wine-growing town in a playful way by taking along the playful walk roadbook: go in search of clues to solve the enigma. Fun guaranteed!
