Ardennes, or the French Ardennes, is an extension of the high plateau of the Belgian Ardennes. The highest point is Croix de Scaille with an elevation of 502 meters. The Ardennes is intersected by the rivers Semois and Meuse, where the Meuse is barely wider than the Semois. Especially the Semois is excellent for canoeing. Some towns characterized by their military role in the past, such as Rocroi, Charleville-Mézières, and Sedan, are worth a visit. On the way from Charleville-Mézières to Givet, there are numerous rock formations to see, for example, Les Dames De Meuse. This is a warning for unfaithful wives; popular belief says that it is wayward women whom God has turned to stone. The Ardennes, with its vast forests, fields, and typical villages, is also ideal for a hiking or cycling trip.
