The magnificent abbey tower of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux is an architectural masterpiece.
The current Baroque abbey tower (1626), designed by architect Nicolas du Bois, is the only major remnant of the rich abbey complex, which was largely demolished after the French Revolution. The tower has been a protected historical monument since 1846.
During the Carolingian Renaissance, the abbey was an important center for intellectual development. Scholars such as Milo of Saint-Amand and Hucbald wrote famous works here, and the Ludwigslied, the oldest known poem in German, was discovered here in 1672.
The abbey was founded around 633-639 by Amandus, on lands he received from King Dagobert I. The site was a favorite of Frankish and French princes for centuries and enjoyed numerous privileges.
Besides the tower, the former abbey portal (now the town hall) is also one of the most beautiful examples of Flemish Renaissance architecture in northern France.
The abbey endured dozens of wars, plunderings, and even destruction by the Normans and later the French Revolution. Each time, sections were restored or rebuilt, until only the tower remained standing—a symbol of centuries of history and identity for the city.
