The Castel Merlet was a castle located above the village of La Malène, in the gorges of the Tarn, in the Lozère department of France. This castle, completely in ruins but whose foundations have been found, would be the oldest castle in France, dating back to the 6th century.
The history of Castel Merlet is associated with the life of Saint Ilère, bishop of the Gabales country around the year 500. Ilère is said to have lived in a hermitage near Mende, but frequently visited the gorges of the Tarn. He is believed to have founded a monastery by the Tarn, which could be identified with the monastery of Sainte-Enimie, which fell quickly into disuse.
