Castle of Montfort

The castle of Montfort was built on a rock by the Dordogne in the Périgord Noir, now a tourist area. In the early 13th century, the castle was owned by the Cathar Bernard de Casnac, and in 1214, the castle was destroyed by Simon IV of Montfort. He also captured the Castle of Castelnaud, another castle of the Casnac, where he installed a garrison. The Casnac retook Castelnaud and had the entire garrison hanged. In 1215, the Montfort retook the castle again, also having the entire castle garrison executed and destroying the castle. Later, the castle of Montfort was destroyed and rebuilt several times, including during the Hundred Years' War, under Louis XI of France, and in 1606 by Henry IV of France. The current buildings date from the 14th and 16th centuries and were restored in the 19th century. The French writer Jean Galmot bought the castle in 1919. Later, the castle was sold to a sheikh from Saudi Arabia, to the displeasure of the local population because he does not allow anyone into his castle. Legend has it that the daughter of Bernard de Casnac, who is said to have been burned alive during the destruction by Simon of Montfort, still haunts the castle.
