Impressive semi-troglodytic castle built in the 13th century by a branch of the Fleckensteins who took the name Froensbourg. Having become a den of robber knights, the castle was besieged and destroyed in 1348 by the Alliance for Public Peace (Landfriedensbund). The castle was rebuilt in 1389 by the brothers Emich and Sygfrid of Loewenstein as a palatine fief. In 1481, it was partly owned by the Fleckensteins, who carried out work on it, including the construction of a residential tower on the southern rock (the ogival door bears the date 1484). After the annexation of Alsace to France, the castle will be dismantled, like many castles, in 1677, but this one is probably already abandoned for a long time...
By municipal decree of March 11, 2022, the castle is currently off-limits for security reasons.
Access: In Niedersteinbach, follow the D3 towards Lembach. After 1.2 km, just before the bridge over the Steinbach, take the path on the left that leads to a picnic area with parking and shelter. From there, take the path marked with a yellow diamond. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the castle.
