German cemetery of Maissemy

Located to the north of the village of Maissemy, along the D 33, the German cemetery of Maissemy gathers the bodies of 30,478 German soldiers. In 1924, the French military authorities established this German cemetery (the second after that of Neuville-Saint-Vaast near Arras, which contains nearly 45,000 graves). The majority of the victims died during the three battles of the Somme from June to November 1916 and in the spring and summer of 1918. It was in 1929 that management of the cemetery was handed over to the German authorities, who erected a memorial between the two mass graves in 1935. The current steles, made of Belgian granite, date from 1972.
