The German cemetery at Maissemy contains 30,478 soldiers. 15.000 are grouped in 2 mass graves. The remaining 15,478 (including 54 unknowns) are buried under steles, often engraved on both sides with the names of 4 or 5 combatants. Many died in the 3 battles of the Somme between June and November 1916, and in the spring and summer of 1918. This German cemetery (the second of the First World War after Neuville-Saint-Vaast near Arras, with almost 45,000 graves) was created in 1924 by the French military authorities, who conceded it to the Germans in 1929. The memorial was inaugurated in 1935. The current steles, in Belgian granite, date from 1972.
