The Dordogne

Source: Wikipedia

Description

The Dordogne springs from Mont-Dore from the Dor and the Dogne on the northern flank of the Puy de Sancy, with 1885m the highest peak of the Central Massif. Shortly after the source, the Dordogne flows past the spa town of La Bourboule before continuing its course directly south. Five dams and hydroelectric power stations were built on the upper course of the river between Bort-les-Orgues and Argentat from 1932 to 1957, operated by the state company Electricité de France. One of the dams on the Dordogne is the Marèges dam. From Argentat, the Dordogne flows westward through Périgord past Souillac and Bergerac. From Saint Pierre-d'Eyraud, the Dordogne is navigable for motorized pleasure craft. In Libourne, the Dordogne becomes a wide river subject to tides, and at the "Bec d'Ambès" north of Bordeaux, it merges with the Garonne to form the Gironde, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Royan.
