Church of the Assumption of Conliège

The Church of the Assumption of Conliège, historically constituting the Collegiate Church of the Nativity of the Virgin of Conliège, is a Catholic church from the 17th century located in Conliège in the Jura region of Franche-Comté. It has been listed as a historical monument since 2009. A building preceding the one visible today is believed to have been constructed in 1393. The first stone of the new building was laid in 1624. The truncated pediment of the façade is a remnant of the Renaissance. Note the original solution taken for the high windows, both at the gable and the north rain wall, which are circular “bull's-eye” windows. The interior boasts a beautiful volume despite the remark by A. Rousset noting “pilasters of a poor Ionic order” and others “belonging to the Tuscan order.” A reliquary is said to contain the remains of Saint Fortuné, Bishop of Fano in Italy. This point could be discussed with the town of Hirsingue, which is supposed to hold the blood of the saint in question.
