La forêt de la Corbière

A magnificent wooded site, numerous streams, a beautiful pond? Welcome to the Corbière forest. Just 10 minutes from Châteaubourg, this natural area protected by the Département d?Ille-et-Vilaine is home to incredible biodiversity. In the Corbière forest, you're in the heart of the Chevré forest massif. In the Middle Ages, this massif, which includes the forests of Rennes, Liffré and Saint-Aubin du-Cormier, formed an important forest complex. Recent archaeological excavations have been carried out. The verdict? Human occupation of the site dates back to the Neolithic period, between ? 2000 and ? 3500 BC. Since then, the forest has always been exploited, particularly for its timber. Ancient hedge-lined paths confirm the ancient presence of men who came to the site in search of fuel, building materials, tools and wine barrels.

It was used as a water reservoir. It was also used for fishing. The mill wheel provided the energy needed to make bread. Long privately owned, the site was also a precious reserve of black shale. The rock was mined to build Marpiré's roads and to make slate for the roofs of local houses.
