In the heart of the Moselle, in the middle of the Seille meadows, a vast area of mud devoid of any vegetation catches the walker's eye. The whitish traces on the surface of the ground betray the presence of crystallized salt. Thanks to the special geological conditions, salt springs have appeared in the heart of the Moselle, in the Seille and Nied valleys, which are unique in France and extremely rare on a European scale. These springs are home to almost twenty plants typical of the seaside, living here more than 400 kilometres from the shores of the North Sea. This floristic richness is coupled with a remarkable wealth of fauna and landscape. The site is recognised as a Natura 2000 zone by the European Community. Animals must be kept on a short leash. Free self-guided tour, with commentary, by reservation at the Tourist Office of the Pays du Saulnois on 03 87 01 16 26.
