FORT DE TROYON

At the heart of its remarkable ashlar architecture, visitors are immersed in the world of the soldiers of a Séré de Rivières-type fort. Built between 1878 and 1879, Fort de Troyon and its garrison underwent a first siege from September 8 to 13, 1914. Despite heavy bombardment, particularly by large-caliber German shells, the heroic resistance of the fort and its soldiers was of paramount importance in preventing German troops from encircling Verdun from the south during the Battle of the Marne. A few days later, from September 22 to 27, 1914, Fort de Troyon was the object of a new phase of intense bombardment, during which a powder magazine collapsed on some twenty soldiers. Traces of the fighting and bombardment of September 1914 are still visible today.

Forgotten for 80 years, the fort is now maintained by a handful of volunteers from "Ceux de Troyon", an association dedicated to safeguarding our historical heritage, so that new generations do not forget the sacrifice of their elders.

- For groups, visits all year round and by reservation only: adults = 5 ?, children (12 to 16) = 3 ?, schoolchildren = 3 ?.

Visits to the fort on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from April to October, 2 pm to 6 pm. Last tour departs at 5 pm.

Summer 2024 (July 8 to September 1 inclusive): the fort is open daily from 2 pm to 6 pm (last entry at 5 pm), subject to volunteer availability.

In September 2024, the fort will be exceptionally closed on Sunday, September 15, for the annual commemorative ceremony.
