Abbatiale Saint-Nicolas

For over 900 years, the church of Saint-Nicolas, also known as the Abbatiale Saint-Nicolas, has overlooked the Oise valley from the top of a rocky promontory, like a fortified castle.
This priory church is a masterpiece of transitional art, the crossroads between Romanesque and Gothic.
Until the French Revolution, the church belonged to the Cluniac monastery of Saint-Leu, now privately owned and open to the public during Heritage Days.

When can you visit the Abbatiale Saint-Nicolas?
Rarely open to the public, you can visit the interior of the Abbatiale Saint-Nicolas in Saint-Leu-d'Esserent on Sunday afternoons from June to September. Explanatory panels and a booklet accompany your visit (available in French/English).
Outside these hours, you can admire the interior of the church through a glass door, every day, all year round.
You can also take one of the guided tours offered by the Office de Tourisme Creil Sud Oise or the town of Saint-Leu d'Esserent, and learn all about the architecture of the Abbey Church, the secrets of the life of the monks who once lived here under the strict rule of Saint-Benoît, and the history of the Dammartin family, the lords who built the priory. The Abbey is located in a medieval quarter, where you can admire the medieval gateway to the former priory, as well as the Cave Banvin, where the monks stored their wine barrels.
