"When the La Filandière textile mill ceased production in the early 2000s, its heirs realized the high heritage potential and infinite educational resources offered by the site in its current state. Listed as a historic monument since 1997, such a factory could never be forgotten. When the factory closed for good, the former premises became the Maison du Textile, supported by initiatives from the Vermandois region.
After watching the introductory film, which lays the foundations of weaving techniques, set off to discover the various trades involved in the art and know-how of textiles, from delicate embroidery to artisanal dyeing and the manufacture of colorful upholstery fabrics. The workshop, which has become a veritable living museum, is home to many treasures, including an impressive machine room featuring authentic weaving looms, still in working order, which the guides are happy to operate, especially for children.
Under the glass roofs of the building, a selection of weaving instruments is on display, giving curious visitors a better understanding of the astonishing mechanisms of these inventions and their evolution over time. The various weaving techniques are detailed and explained during demonstrations organized by the Maison. Finally, discover the secrets of the Jacquard loom, which revolutionized weaving in the early 19th century. By automating machines using a mechanical system of needles, punched cards and cylinders (like a music box), Lyonnais inventor Joseph Marie Jacquard transformed the industry forever, sparking a revolution in the working-class community and inspiring the beginnings of computer technology with his innovative device.
Further on in the museum, the weaver?s house, a meticulous reconstruction of the interior of a typical family dwelling of the period, plunges visitors into the world of the 1930s, when every member of the family had a role to play in the manufacture of fabrics. At the end of the tour, shuttles, wefts and brocades will no longer hold any secrets for you!
In addition to its regular events, the Maison du Textile offers a variety of creative workshops for adults and children throughout the year, and is also the ideal place to celebrate a birthday with a group. Don't hesitate to ask the museum for the full program, or check out the social networks (Facebook Maison du Textile https://www.facebook.com/maisondutextile or the calendar of events of the Saint-Quentinois Tourist Office https://www.facebook.com/groups/1530745413685266)."
