Listed as a historical monument, this townhouse built in the 1770's got its name from the General Henri-Gatien Bertrand (1773-1844), Grand Maréchal under the Empire, faithful fighting companion and friend of Napoleon whom he followed to Saint Helena. The town museum of Châteauroux opened there in 1921 and know benefits from the label "Museum of France". It explains the art of time in the 27 rooms among which 6 are dedicated to temporary exhibitions. The visit allows visitors to discover remarkable collections; archaeology, Napoleonic art, the Fine Arts, decorative arts, contemporary art. Not to be missed:apoleon's aviary brought back by the General Bertrand from the island of Saint Helena, the original great plaster of Camille Claudel's Sakountala and Vivant Denon's small gothic reliquary.
