The first cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary Mother of God, Verdun Cathedral is one of the oldest in Europe (990)
Marked by war and unrest due to the geographical location of the bishopric of Verdun, Verdun Cathedral is the symbol of a city that continues to rise from its ruins. As a result, it encompasses all architectural styles, from Rhenish Romanesque to Baroque: 10th-century pillars, 12th-century crypt, 14th-16th-century chapels, 16th-century cloister, 18th-century Baroque decor.
On April 2, 1755, a huge fire destroyed the cathedral's roof, necessitating restoration work. Bishop de Nicolai and Canon Chaligny de Plaine, a keen art historian, introduced the Baroque style to the cathedral's interior decoration. The baldachin (inspired by St. Peter's in Rome) at the crossroads of the transept and the east choir was installed on this occasion.
Notre Dame Cathedral bears in its stones more than ten centuries of history, including the traces of the First World War bombings.
