Fontaine Stanislas

Stanislas Leszczynski, King of Poland and Duke of Lorraine, came regularly to Plombières-les-Bains to enjoy the benefits of its waters. On his last visit, he offered a "feuillée" to his granddaughters, Mesdames Adélaïde and Victoire, daughters of Louis XV, near the Civrac barn. It was there that he learned of the existence of a singular fountain located high up.

Curious, he had himself taken there in a sedan chair and, amazed by the site, exclaimed: "This is one of the beauties of nature and I want it to bear my name". Since then, the spring has been known as Fontaine Stanislas.

This enchanting spot is steeped in history. The rock overhanging the fountain bears four inscriptions in tribute to Stanislas, one of which, engraved in 1766, dates from his tragic death. Another, composed in 1813, is signed by the Chevalier then Marquis de Boufflers (1738-1815), son of the famous marquise who often accompanied the king to Plombières.

To the left of the fountain, a small rock carved with a head reminds us that Hector Berlioz composed part of his opera Les Troyens here, in 1856 and 1857. A site steeped in history for you to discover on your visit to Plombières.
