The street follows the eastern line of the old city wall. On this side, the facades are built on the substructions of the walls. The name of the street certainly dates back to the 15th-century site known as "Les Grangettes", which the street was intended to serve.
The street was lined with small barns that served as outbuildings for the mansions on Place Saint-Pierre. At no. 28, the remains of a massive tower belonging to the town?s defensive system can be seen. But it was at the end of the 18th century that this street acquired a new importance for the town: in 1765, a spinning and weaving workshop was set up here under the direction of the Sisters of Christian Charity to provide work and education for the town?s young girls. Although traces of this workshop are nowhere to be seen, it was the origin of the city?s first textile factories, which flourished in the 19th century.
Rue Chavée is lined with early 16th-century houses whose facades are typical of the Lorraine style. In the past, this street served as the entrance to the "îlot de la Halle". Chavée comes from the Old French word for "hollow path". At the corner of these two streets stands the former mansion of Jean Preudhomme (1527), councillor to the Chambre des Comptes and later Receiver General of the Barrois region. Unlike other Renaissance-influenced mansions, this one retains a Gothic decor with its two sculpted canopies.
