LA RUE DES GRANGETTES

The street follows the eastern route of the old enclosure. On this side, the facades are built on the substructures of the walls. The name certainly goes back to the name of the locality
" Les Grangettes " mentioned in the 15th century and which the street was to serve.
This street was lined with small barns that served as outbuildings for the private mansions of the Place Saint-Pierre. At no. 28 are visible the remains of a massive tower belonging to the city's defensive system. But it was at the end of the 18th century that this street acquired a new importance for the city: in 1765, a spinning and weaving workshop was set up there under the direction of the Sisters of Christian Charity to provide work and education to the young girls of the city. Although today the traces of this workshop are totally invisible, it was at the origin of the first textile factories of the city, a very prosperous activity in the 19th century...
Rue Chavée is lined with houses from the early 16th century whose facades are typical of the Lorraine style. In the past, this street was used as the entrance to the market island. Chavée would come from the old French "chemin creux". At the corner of these two streets is the former hotel of Jean Preudhomme (1527), adviser to the Chambre des Comptes and then Receiver General of the Barrois. Unlike other
this Renaissance-influenced house retains its Gothic decor with its two carved canopies.
