Relive the history of France in places that have seen Gauls and Romans, kings and queens, saints and revolutionaries, World War 1 soldiers and famous artists!
Rebuilt in the 12th century by Louis VI le gros, the château is the successor to a Merovingian and Carolingian palace. A major event marked its history, as it became the cradle of the Capetian dynasty.
Following the accidental death of the last Carolingian, Louis V, Hugues Capet was elected king in 987.
At the entrance, you'll see a Romanesque tower, probably the remains of a rectangular keep. The château's main building backs onto a 3rd-century Gallo-Roman wall. The ground floor housed the outbuildings, while the second floor was reserved for the king and his entourage.
Remodeled several times under the reigns of Louis IX, Charles V and François I, the château saw many kings before being sold as national property in 1793. Some of the buildings were then demolished, and in 1956 the town bought back the ruins and landscaped the park.
