Relive the history of France in these places which saw Gallic and Roman, kings and queens, saints and revolutionaries, soldiers of the 1st world war and famous artists! Rebuilt in the 12th century by Louis VI the Great, the castle succeeds a Merovingian and Carolingian palace. A major event marked its history, as it became the cradle of the Capetian dynasty. Following the accidental death of the last Carolingian, Louis V, Hugues Capet was elected king in 987. At the entrance, you will see a Romanesque tower, probably the remains of a rectangular keep. The main building of the castle is leaning against the Gallo-Roman wall of the 3rd century. The ground floor housed the common areas while the second floor was reserved for the king and his entourage. Remodeled several times under the reigns of Louis IX, Charles V and François I, the castle has seen many kings before being sold as national property in 1793. Part of the buildings were then demolished and in 1956 the city bought the ruins and developed the park.
