This church, in the Romanesque-Rhenish style, was built in the heart of the old village, near the stream. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it was equipped with a double defense system, with its hoarding and shooting windows above the square bell tower. Shelters were built in the attic and tower. Damaged by fire in the 12th and early 19th centuries, and doomed to destruction at the end of the 19th century, the church was saved by the Monuments Historiques department, which classified it in 1904.
During the Great War, it was used as a field hospital.
Traditionally, castles were used to protect the population, but as the number of castles was limited, people were forced to fortify churches.
The church, pivotal to social life and the only strong structure in the village, protects people. It is also the repository of the community?s precious objects. To fulfill this role, its architecture is adorned with elements of fortification.
Guided tours on request from the Tourist Office.
This building features :
- loopholes and archères: vertical slits with widening to open the angle of fire.
- hoarding: wooden storeys supported by corbels or placed on beams.
