Borne Freedom Way d999-41km Bayeux Museum

This (borne) marker comes from the D999, between Saint-Lô and Villedieu-les-Poêles, kilometer 41. It is a cylindrical cement marker. It is just over one meter tall and weighs more than 400 kilograms. It is one of the 1,147 milestone markers that since 1946 marked one of the routes taken by troops coming to liberate Europe: the route taken by General Patton's armored vehicles of the Third U.S. Army. Most of these concrete traffic markers were gradually withdrawn or replaced with replicas made of lighter materials, as they were dangerous in a traffic accident.

THE KILOMETER 41 TERMINAL

This terminal is an allegory of freedom:
- the round top is surrounded by a decoration of 48 stars, representing the 48 states that formed the United States at the time.
- a flame of freedom is in the center, this flame is modeled after that of the Statue of Liberty in New York
- finally, the base of the terminal is crossed by waves that show that the liberators crossed the ocean to come liberate Europe.
