La Porte de Châtillon - Bar-sur-Seine

This gate, formerly known as the "Porte de la Maison-Dieu" , dates from the 17th century.

It is one of the 3 gates of Bar-sur-Seine , together with the Porte de Troyes and the gate in the Rue de la République that have disappeared.

Classical French architecture stems from very diverse movements. She borrows as much from antiquity as from the Renaissance. A small steel ball, embedded in the masonry, commemorates the battle of March 2, 1814.

This gate is a defense symbol. In the shape of a triumphal arch, it refers to the wars of ancient Rome. Then the soldiers were made to walk under a magical gate to rid them of the destructive energy they carried that was dangerous to their country.

Such gates were placed at the entrance to the city as triumphal monuments on which the statues of the victors stood above ordinary humanity.
