Monument Frédéric Bazille

Well known to art lovers all over the world, the name of the famous impressionist painter Frédéric Bazille is also forever part of the memory of the town of Beaune-la-Rolande.
Indeed, the young and already great artist joined the Zouaves
on August 10th 1870. He was part of the 3rd regiment of march, which joined the 20th
the 20th army corps of the Loire and had, during the battle of Beaune-la-Rolande, a particularly heroic behaviour,
going up to the assault in a tremendous rush, bayonet on gun, under the heavy fire of the Prussians entrenched in the city. In this attack, half of the Zouaves column was mowed down, including Frédéric Bazille who was mortally wounded by two bullets: he was buried in one of the many improvised pits on the battlefield.
