Maison de la dernière cartouche

During the War of 1870, soldiers of the Marine Infantry stationed themselves in this hostel in order to put up a final resistance to the Bavarian soldiers during the fighting on 1 September. The museum is located in the former hostel where the heroic resistance action of about 50 men of the Marine Infantry Division took place during the fighting in Bazeilles on 31 August and 1 September 1870. Traces of this event have been preserved, notably the piece immortalized by the famous painting by Alphonse de Neuville. Most of the objects on display come from the battlefield as well as from donations from the military's descendants. The museum presents a general overview of the war, the battle of Sedan and the course of the fighting in the village. At the end of the visit, you can go to the Ossuary of Bazeilles, located in the commune's cemetery. You can also see, to the right of the House of the Last Cartridge, a place where 19 soldiers are buried, and in the centre of the village, the monument commemorating these events. Every year, a ceremony is held in the village to commemorate the bravery of the men of this weapon.
